This is the trailer for “An Introduction to Classical Guitar: Establishing a Firm Technical Foundation”, a video intended for beginning students by Masakazu Ito, prologue in his Technique Series. Join Masa as he introduces the classical guitar, demonstrating fundamental classical guitar technique for both left and right hands, including proper rest and free strokes. Hand and finger strengthening drills are provided to help build proficiency and develop good tone. Practice with Masa as he performs essential exercises from Ricardo Iznaola’s Kitharologus® and Aaron Shearer’s Classic Guitar Technique®, Vol. I. Instruction culminates with two famous compositions: Andantino by Matteo Carcassi and Waltz in G by Ferdinand Carulli.
This DVD includes 48 minutes of insightful instruction. Follow Masa’s performance and musical analysis effortlessly using the interactive score. Observe his technique up close with extensive picture-in-a-picture features. Sheet music for Carcassi and Carulli is provided with the DVD in high-resolution PDF format, including fingering edits by Ito. Reference material for Iznaola and Shearer content is not included; students are encouraged to acquire both texts for use in conjunction with this video.
Masakazu Ito is recognized as one of today’s top guitarists, acclaimed by musicians, composers, conductors and critics for his mastery of the instrument and its repertoire. Ito is an international performer, teacher, composer and recording artist. He currently holds a teaching position at the University of Denver’s Lamont School of Music, where he received a master’s degree under the guidance of Ricardo Iznaola.

This Carulli Waltz is a charming example of his work for the beginning to intermediate guitarist. Unfortunately, Carulli gained a reputation as being a rather facile composer when in truth he couldn’t get the publishers to publish most of his more difficult works. He was born in Italy in the same year as Beethoven (1770), he became one of the most popular and loved classical guitar composers and players of his time. Indeed, that love extends right up to the present day as new generations of guitarists “find” his music and make it their own.
